2015 Lincoln MKC at Chicago: Good, but Lincoln Needs to Do More

2014 Lincoln MKC Chicago Auto Show
Lincoln announced their new-for-2015 Lincoln MKC crossover at this year’s Detroit Auto

Show back in January. I was there with my fellow Gas 2 people Chris DeMorro and Nick Brown, and we all missed it. Every one of us walked by it, and none of us recognized it as a new model, despite the big lazy suzan underneath it and the shiny chrome “Ecoboost” badges on the MKC’s backside. Lincoln, clearly, has a problem … but it’s not the problem you might think.
The fact that this new Ecoboost SUV didn’t catch our eye is probably a good thing. In a show packed with hot new cars, the MKC (unlike its sore-thumb brother, the Navigator) fit in perfectly. The styling, too, is dead-nuts on, and the 2015 Lincoln MKC is every bit as good-looking in person as, say, the 2015 Porsche Macan. Maybe better than the Porsche, if you prefer Ford’s Edge look to Porsche’s “angry jellybean”. Even the interior …
Lincoln MKC interior
… is a modern-looking piece. Light, airy, and roomy-looking in person- even if my own pictures from the show floor didn’t come out right.
No, Lincoln’s problem isn’t in its product line. Lincoln has a great product line these days, full of both green and go-fast options. The problem, instead, is Lincoln’s attitude.
Last summer, I reached out to Lincoln to pitch a SEMA build to Lincoln through Switzer Performance. The guys at Switzer are big fans of the Ecoboost, as are we, and we wanted to do a seriously high HP Lincoln sedan and, as I gracefully explained to Ford’s Scott Monty, “drive it right up AMG’s ass.” We had a legit engine-builder lined up, a few handshake-deal sponsors, and had the hardware to convert the big, bad Lincoln to flex-fuel for a green angle in place beforereaching out. It would have been a huge media hit for Lincoln, we all thought.
No response from Lincoln. Mr. Monty explained that Lincoln “didn’t really do SEMA” anymore.
At the Chicago Auto Show, I tried to ask questions about the upcoming 2015 Lincoln MKC. Nothing fancy, just stuff like: When would it be available? Who could I speak to to arrange a test drive? Was Lincoln planning a hybrid version?
Not only did the fashionable and trendy models at the Lincoln booth not know the answers to the above questions- they told me, on a press day, that there was no one at the show “from Lincoln” for me to talk to.
One of the biggest auto shows in the world. A new product that you could line up next to similar models from Porsche or BMW and look credible with. A prime show location and big-budget display. A storied legacy with tons of gear head cred. Lincoln had all of those things going for it at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, and didn’t even bother showing up.
That’s too bad. Too bad for Lincoln, and too bad for us- that MKC really is a good-looking little car, and it might have had a chance to do something positive for Lincoln in the marketplace, if only the people who made it were willing to pound their own chests a teeny, tiny bit. That’s just my take on it, though- what’s yours?

Chinese EV Subsidies Extended, But Still Not Enough

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.
chinese-evsIn a surprise announcement, Chinese EV subsidies have been extended as the government grapples with an epic pollution problem and slow green car sales. Despite its many cities literally choking to death on their own smog though, the government has yet to implement any meaningful changes to its transportation policy.

The Chinese EV subsidy program first began in either 2008 or 2009, and though some heralded it as the beginning of an electric car revolution, confusion and limitations have made for poor electric car sales. These subsidies were generous, with incentives as high as $9,800 for an electric car, $5,800 for a plug-in hybrid, and over $80,000 for the purchase of an electric bus.
The program was due to be phased out entirely by the end of 2015, with cuts in payouts over the next couple of years. However, government officials announced that the reductions in payouts would be 5% for EV buyers instead of 10%, and 10% instead of 20% for plug-in hybrid buyers., and the program will continue through at least the end of 2016. It’s a welcome bit of good news for Chinese EV investors who bought into companies like green car companies like BYD, which saw its stock price surge some 10% thanks to the good news.
Unfortunately, these EV subsidies were hampered by confusion and limitations from the start. The subsidies were only available in some 13 cities initially, and though the program later doubled in size, it only applied to domestically-made cars. WIth Chinese EVs in their infancy at the time, and foreign automakers unable to benefit from the subsidies, sales of electric cars with fairly pathetic. In 2012, just 11,241 EVs were sold throughout all of China, with plug-in hybrids selling just 1,311 units. In 2013 EV sales rose to just 14,604 EVs and 3,038 plug-in hybrids.
Does it sound like I’m being a bit harsh? Well the state of California bought more electric and plug-in hybrid cars than the entirety of China, and the communist country’s goal of 5 million plug-in vehicles by 2020 seems like an impossible fairy tale, barring some sort of divine or governmental intervention. More importantly though, the epic levels of smog are becoming a serious problem for the Chinese government.
Subsidies obviously aren’t enough though, and China should consider the Norwegian method of encouraging hybrid and electric car use, which can be summed up in three words; tax, tax, and taxes.

Germany's Brabus has carved itself a niche in the ultra-high premium car market by taking cars that are already very expensive and exquisitely engineered, and turning them into high-powered bespoke machines crafted for the mega-wealthy. The latest is the Brabus 800 iBusiness, a widebody Mercedes G 65 with an 800 hp, 1,420 Nm, 6.0 liter V12 biturbo engine and a range of connectivity and display options to match any well-funded Silicon Valley start-up's offices.
Of recent times Brabus has begun customizing Range Rovers, though it has traditionally specialized in Mercedes-Benz, Smart and Maybach vehicles, and became the largest independent Mercedes tuner in the world when Mercedes purchased AMG two decades ago.
It's not the performance which will make the all-wheel-drive Brabus 800 iBusiness most attractive to Gizmag's readership though – it's the connectivity, computing power and display options which have been integrated within the interior, turning it into the ultimate mobile office.

The BRABUS iBusiness 3D is based on the Viano Mercedes Van, offering a lot more room and even more space for equipment - it is described as a 3D Multimedia Lounge on Wheels
Brabus was one of the first bespoke customization companies to integrate computers, multimedia and telecommunications into cars. Gizmag's automotive reporters have been drooling over Brabus' multimedia functionality for a decade at the Frankfurt, Paris and Geneva auto shows.
Since that time, as digital technology has developed at such a rapid pace, Brabus has continued to incorporate a wide range of high-tech internal options into its vehicles, and the G 65 show car to be displayed at the Geneva Motor Show next week is designed as a showcase for the company's capabilities. Communication is just one of the themes as music, movies and games are also available via an iPad mini, Mac mini, iPod touch and Apple TV.
A Mac Mini computer is the hub of all the functionality, and it is housed (along with the Apple TV and power amp) in a console in the trunk. The rear seating area of the G-Class contains the biggest changes. The standard bench seat bench has been replaced by individual seats with an integrated seat ventilation system.
The BRABUS 800 iBusiness is based on the Mercedes Benz G 65
A console between the rear seats contains most of the multimedia components, docking stations for the iPad mini and iPod touch plus a refrigerator, a folding and swiveling table for each rear seat, concealed storage of keyboard/mouse plus USB ports for connecting to the Mac mini. The DVD changer of the standard COMAND system was also integrated into the multimedia options.

Brabus also specializes in creating bespoke business jet interiors, so craftsmanship and integration is both seamless and immoderate. A 15.6-inch LCD monitor hides in the finest leather and Alcantara headliner to be deployed remotely. You can have the high-end sound system of your choice tailored to the G-Class interior with the iPod touch serving as the content source.

The iPad mini is integrated into the vehicle’s on-board electronics system, and controls the multimedia equipment via it's touch-screen interface.
At night, the lighting ambiance for the black all-leather interior can be entirely controlled with lighting between the seats and in the roof plus the gimbaled LED reading lights in the roof-mounted console.
Naturally, Brabus also offers interiors in any color of soft and breathable Brabus Mastik leather and Alcantara, with many leather upholstery designs and wood or carbon-fiber inlays.

The BRABUS 800 iBusiness is based on the Mercedes Benz G 65, but with 25 percent more horsepower and 40 percent more torque
In standard form, the Mercedes G 65 AMG Final Edition runs a 463 kW (630 hp) 6.0 Liter V12 Biturbo and is the world's most powerful production off-road vehicle.
The Brabus is upgraded to 800 hp, adding more than 25 percent to the power, plus 42 percent more torque, though in practice, peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft). While that's only 10 percent extra grunt, if you plan on getting the pedal to the metal in a beastie such as this, might we suggest some special neck exercises at the gym might be in order.

His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the Brabus stand during the 2011 Dubai International Motor Show
In order to extract the extra motive force, Brabus developed a high-tech twin turbo system with turbo housings integrated into the exhaust manifolds for the custom-developed, high-performance turbochargers. The new turbos are designed to produce a higher boost pressure than the production turbos, plus further optimize throttle response. Four water-to-air intercoolers ensure lower charge-air temperatures, making the mobile office equally at home in extreme conditions such as the desert. Brabus has found a ready-made market for its wares in oil-rich Middle Eastern countries and now exhibits regularly at the Dubai International Motor Show. Twin air filter boxes are positioned in the front fenders to ensure an adequate supply of clean air for the force-fed engine.
As can be expected, the exhaust includes a few tricks for the young at heart. The stainless-steel exhaust system includes free-flow metal catalysts for almost-responsible emissions, while there's a "sound management" system built in via a controlled butterfly valve. That big brutal V12 engine can be whisper quiet for slipping into the garage past hometime, or bellow its power to the world in the “Sport” position, all operated by a button on the steering wheel.
The BRABUS 800 iBusiness is based on the Mercedes Benz G 65
All this trickery is choreographed by a cleverly mapped engine management system which maintains emission compliance within Euro V standards. The high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner Motul.
The Brabus 800 will reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 4.2 seconds, with an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) though removing the limiter will enhance maximum velocity to 270 km/h (167 mph). That's mightily impressive considering the vehicle has a distinctly un-aerodynamic shape and the frontal area of a small building.
The BRABUS 800 iBusiness is based on the Mercedes Benz G 65
There are a host of vanity features which backlight logos and the like, but one of the functional lighting highlights are the Brabus xenon headlights which replace the production headlights of the G model, and include special integrated LED daytime running lights that also serve as turn signals. This renders the production turn signals on top of the fenders obsolete, so those openings are closed with custom covers made of clear carbon fiber to add another visually-distinctive highlight.
The new wheel arches make room for fat 23-inch forged wheels wearing 305/35 R 23 high-performance tires from your choice of Continental, Pirelli or Yokohama.
We could go on and on about the attention to detail in myriad technological features, but one that stands out as very useful if you're planning on driving both in town and in the wilds, as this vehicle is equally capable of, is the suspension.
The BRABUS 800 iBusiness is based on the Mercedes Benz G 65
Developed in conjunction with Bilstein, the suspension is adjustable at the press of a button in the center console between two setups via electronically adjustable shock absorbers. In the "comfort" position, Brabus claims the ride is even better than the standard production car, but when the mood takes you, pressing the button for "sport" mode firms the handling.
On top of that, the Ride Control suspension has automatic damper adjustment. If the vehicle sensor systems detect that certain parameters such as speed, lateral acceleration and steering angle might lead to a critical handling situation, the suspension is automatically switched to the sport setting to improve stability. Conversely, when the driver gets off the gas and adopts a more relaxed driving style, the CAN control unit reverts to comfort mode.
Paying this much money for a car probably won't give you too many concerns about paying the freight at the gas station, but, just for the record, the Brabus 800 iBusiness delivers city economy of 22.7 l/100 km, highway economy of 13.7 l/100 km, and a combined 17.0 l/100 km, while CO2 emissions for the combined cycle run to 397 g/km.

Not clean enough? No problem!

Under the bodywork of the 4WD Brabus electric E-Class Mercedes
If those figures disturb you, and you are both independently wealthy and environmentally aware, Brabus caters to all people with deep pockets and one of its recent show cars was an all-wheel electric E-Class Mercedes with 320 kW of peak power and a stunning 3,200 Nm of Torque.
The electric E-Class has a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph), a 0–100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds and 350 km range, all without emitting as much as a single gram of CO2 at the tailpipe. The Zero Emission business division of Brabus is recognized by the German Federal Motor Vehicle Department as an automobile manufacturer of alternative-drive cars in its own right.

Not enough room inside? No problem!

Yet another Brabus offering is the iBusiness 3D, described as a "3D Multimedia Lounge on Wheels."
The Brabus “iBusiness 3D” is based on the Mercedes Viano the interior designers and combines state-of-the-art 3D entertainment technology from Sony with Apple components such as iPad and Mac mini that control the entire on-board multimedia equipment.
The rear compartment of the Brabus iBusiness 3D is dominated by a full HD screen that can be deployed from the partition wall behind the front seats at the push of a button. The screen is a 40-inch Sony LED monitor with state-of-the-art 3D technology. The 3D movies are played on a Samsung Blu-ray player. A DVBT receiver for TV reception is available in addition.
The BRABUS iBusiness 3D is based on the Viano - it is described as a 3D Multimedia Lounge ...
The 40-inch screen is also the main monitor for the integrated Mac mini computer system, which is connected to the internet via UMTS and HSDPA protocols and features a wireless WiFi network for integrating the other computers on board the vehicle.
Maximum comfort in an exclusive ambiance is a decisive characteristic of the lounge concept and the rear compartment has two powered comfort chairs with power footrests that can be reclined all the way to a sleeping position.
The BRABUS iBusiness 3D is based on the Viano - it is described as a 3D Multimedia Lounge ...
When driving at night the Brabus starry sky, created by more than tiny 400 fiber-optic lights integrated into the Alcantara headliner, provides a highly exceptional atmosphere in the rear compartment of the minivan.
A fragrancing module controlled from the iPad also contributes to the sense of well-being on board the Brabus iBusiness 3D. A safe that can only be opened by means of a fingerprint scan provides a secure storage space for important documents and other valuables.

If getting to the next meeting might mean the difference between selling an oil-well or not, might we suggest the Brabus 850 Biturbo iBusiness. Shown last September, the 850 stands for the number of horsepower the motor produces, making it the fastest office on wheels in the world, with 850 hp, 1,450 Nm torque and a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).

Not macho enough? No problem!

Neighbor drives a Hummer? Brabus has that covered too. You can get the iBusiness package fitted to any Mercedes or Range Rover, but the go-anywhere-you-like Brabus B63S 6x6 has an extra dose of steroids. The 700 hp 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine feeds power to all six wheels, weights four tons and is electronically limited to 160 km/h (99 mph) due to its off-road tires.

In summary

Brabus vehicles are not cheap. The manufacturer exists in the upper stratosphere of luxury vehicles and will cater to any whim, or need, including armor plating. Only a small percentage of people can afford vehicles such as Brabus produces.
In the cut-throat world of commerce though, much of the iBusiness package should be able to be offered as an accessible package by the horde of automotive manufacturers who make cars for the proletariat. Maybe they could consider the wired middle class and begin delivering optional extras for our vehicles that have some genuinely useful options beyond an iPod dock.

The Lexus RC Coupe we saw at the Tokyo Motor Show just three months ago is to gain a sportier “F Sport” cousin at the Geneva Motor Show next week and will hit showrooms later this year. Even bigger news is that Lexus is going racing, and a GT3 version of the car will be available to race teams within 12 months.
Very few details of the RC F Sport have been released along with the images, though in a separate announcement, Lexus has also announced it will premier a racing concept of the “RC F” sports coupe, named the “RC F GT3 concept”,
The RC F GT3 concept has been developed to meet GT3 standards, and weighs a featherweight 1,250 kg (2,756 lb). The GT3 version will use the RC F’s V8 engine, with performance bolstered to more than 540 horsepower (403 kW).
It's not exactly a concept, as Lexus has already announced it will supply the GT3 from the beginning of 2015 and is obviously keen to use motorsport to build the brand.
As far as the RC F Sport road car goes, here's the entire press release:
Tokyo, Japan, February 28, 2014 – Lexus will display the “F Sport” grade of the new “RC” coupe at the 84th Geneva International Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland from March 4 through 16. The vehicle is scheduled for launch the second half of this year.
The F Sport version adds an enhanced sporty and dynamic interior/exterior design and the driving enjoyment and performance of Lexus "F" vehicles to the RC, which debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show 2013.
Interior and Exterior Features
The RC F Sport features an exclusive version of the spindle grille, similarly featured on the high performance “RC F”, with an “F” motif embedded in its mesh from below the Lexus symbol.
Exclusive 19-inch aluminum wheels feature a pair of 10-spoke sets – with a machine finish on the foremost set and dark metallic paint on the inner set – layered in an offset pattern to add 3-dimensional depth.
Other exclusive features include a driver’s meter with movable center ring indicative of Lexus design and craftsmanship, and a steering wheel and shift knob wrapped in perforated leather.
Available body colors include F Sport-exclusive White Nova Glass Flake and newly developed orange and blue colors. An exclusive Dark Rose theme is available for the interior.
Driving Performance
The custom-tuned suspension employs an AVS system that optimally controls the attenuation force of the shock absorbers to ensure superb riding comfort, stable control, as well as excellent performance and safety under a variety of driving and road conditions.
On the RC 350 F Sport, speed, steering and other vehicle aspects are monitored by the Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system to optimally control the turning angles of the wheels for superb running stability and agility at high and medium speeds, and excellent maneuverability at low speeds.

Appearing in Geneva next week, the 650S delivers a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph) and the ability to hit 200 km/h (124 mph) in only 8.4 seconds
Image Gallery (10 images)

Just days ahead of the Geneva Auto Show, manufacturers continue to leak images and vehicle details. Following on the heels of last week’s reveal of its new 650S supercar, McLaren has just released performance specs for the vehicle. Until today power specs, styling chatter and passenger amenities were all the public had to go on, but now the company has made available the car’s true performance ability – and it is glorious.
For those who missed last week’s 650S release, the latest weapon in McLaren’s arsenal is a revised twin-turbocharged V8 sporting a mid-engine arrangement. The newly-tweaked 3.8 liter engine is capable of developing 641 horsepower (650 for marketing purposes) and 500 lb ft (678 Nm) of torque through McLaren’s 7-speed SSG gearbox.
Faster than McLaren’s F1 and 12C, but with a familiar-looking design, the 650S is reportedly capable of not only a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph) but can hit 200 km/h (124 mph) in only 8.4 seconds. Figures like a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 3.0 seconds flat and a quarter mile time of 10.5 seconds not only guarantees the car a spot in the supercar charts, but also puts it faster to 200 km/h than McLaren’s legendary F1 by a full second.
The 650S is capable of decelerating from 100 km/h (62 mph) to 0 in only 100 ft (30.5 m)
However this comparison is based on current versus 20 year-old technology, so to ensure fairness McLaren reports the 650S is also faster to the 200 km/h mark than the 12C by a half second. No word yet on how the new model compares against the P1.
The 650S also makes good use of McLaren’s signature carbon fiber monocell and aluminum architecture. Weighing in at 1,330 kg (2,932 lb) the 650S is lighter than the 12C by 69 kg (152 lb), and is 65 kg (143 lb) lighter than the the 1,395 kg (3,075 lb) P1.
The 650S has a combined mileage rating of 24.2 mpg, but will cost you US$325,000
When it comes to stopping, the 650S apparently will not disappoint. According to the firm known for its F1 innovations, by using the joint forces of carbon ceramic rotors (F 394mm/R 380mm), forged aluminum hubs, McLaren’s ProActive Chassis Control, Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires (F235/35 R19 / R305/30 R20) and the active Airbrake wing out back, the 650S is capable of decelerating from 100 km/h (62 mph) to 0 in only 100 ft (30.5 m). As speeds jump so do braking distances. From 200 km/h (124 mph) the 650S needs 404 ft (123 m) to come to rest, while from 300 km/h (186 mph) to 0 the car needs 889 ft (271 m).
Most owners won’t be overly concerned about mileage, but the few who are will be happy to know the 650S can achieve a combined rating of 24.2 mpg (9.7 L/100km) when the car is driven in a reasonable manner. McLaren reports pricing for the 650S to start at US$325,000.
The global reveal of the McLaren 650S CoupĂ© and Spider will take place next week at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show. Watch for Gizmag’s upcoming coverage from the show.

Nissan Electric Cars Invade Bhutan

WP Greet Box icon
Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.
In a move designed to cut the import of foreign oil, the Himalayan nation of Bhutan has signed a deal with Renault-Nissan to import the all-electric Nissan Leaf. The imported Leaf electric cars will be used as government vehicles and taxis, at first, laying the groundowrk for more widespread adoption down the road.
You can read more about the Nissan/Bhutan deal in this article, below, which originally appeared on our sister site, Cleantechnica.

Photo of a Leaf negotiating Thimphu, capital city of Bhutan, released by Nissan 2/21/14.
A new agreement between leading EV manufacturer Renault-Nissan and the Asian mountain nation of Bhutan looks like a win for both parties, and a great development for electric vehicles in general. Carlos Ghosn, Nissan’s chief executive officer, visited Bhutan this week to cement the deal with Tshering Tobgay, the Himalayan country’s progressive new prime minister.
Bhutan stands to gain strength as a nation by aggressive pursuit of non-fossil vehicles like the Leaf. It may also become an environmental role model for other nations. Wedged between India and China, Bhutan’s 27 hydroelectric plants export huge amounts of power in both directions. However, as noted in our earlier article on this topic, the country suffers from its need to import petroleum. Without the burden of internal combustion engines, Bhutan can drop major expenditures and head for energy self-sufficiency, or better. Tobgay aims to cut Bhutan’s fossil fuel imports by a whopping 70%. The nation’s compact area and its light-duty industrial focus (40% of all jobs are in agriculture) make it an ideal candidate for EV conversion.
As for Nissan, the new move doesn’t seem all that important on the surface–the giant manufacturer has deals in about 100 other countries, many of them larger–but Nissan will benefit greatly from the Bhutan agreement for a number of reasons. First, although other EV brands are also welcome, Nissan will gain most because it has captured a large share of the market up front. The government vehicles already contracted and taxis in the second purchase round make up about 10–15% of all of Bhutan’s cars and small trucks. The taxi fleet alone will equal about 3.5% of all EVs the company has sold worldwide so far. And the Leafs will start arriving in about a week….
Will the price tag on these zero-emissions Nissans be too high for local customers? Bloomberg News quoted residents of the capital city as expressingskepticism. A travel agent asked the reporter, “Will the electric cars be cheap? If not, then it won’t make a difference.”
Not much at first to individuals, perhaps, but certainly to the economy and the Franco-Japanese manufacturing alliance. World Bank data reportedly show that at a US non-discounted starting price of $28,000, the Leaf costs about 12 times times the average income of a person in Bhutan. Because few but high-income residents have cars currently, the situation for most citizens will not change. “If we can get international agencies and individuals to support us to subsidize one-third of that price, it becomes very affordable,” Tobgay pointed out.
Ghosn said it’s too early for Nissan to shake out an initial vehicle price. Government investment will probably encourage more consumers, and subsequent economies of scale will likely make EVs more affordable. Bhutan is also considering exempting electric cars from import duties and taxes. And, of course, the money saved by switching from fossil fuel imports will benefit the entire population.
John Voelcker of Green Car Reports and others note that Nissan will work with Bhutan on modifications to suit local conditions. Distance above sea level does not mandate adaptations. Although, average elevation in Bhutan is 8,000 feet (almost 3,000 meters), which makes a huge difference to propulsion of internal combustion engines (although less so when turbocharged)–however, altitude hardly matters with electric-powered cars.
Nonetheless, factors that accompany elevation do make a difference to performance of all kinds of vehicles. Bhutan’s a speck on the global scale, but consider that similar mountain ranges cover approximately 20% of the world’s surface, originate 80% of its fresh water, and house 10% of its population, totaling 715 million people. Among the world’s million-plus metropolitan areas over a mile high are several huge cities in Mexico, including its capital; urban areas in Central and South America; and other places, like Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Kabul, and Sana’a (Yemen).
High-altitude regions differ in some aspects (proximity to the equator, distance to water, types of landforms, and biomes, for example), but they share important characteristics like difficult terrain, rapid variations in weather–sometimes including more precipitation–and temperature, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanism, avalanche, landslides, and severe erosion. All of these factors contribute to making Bhutan an ideal laboratory for honing electric vehicles to accommodate challenging conditions like excessive slopes, switchbacks, mudslides, and even gravel or dirt roadways. (Fully 40% of Bhutan’s roads are unpaved.)

The deal between Nissan and Bhutan is likely good news for everybody involved in the electric vehicle explosion of the 20-teens. There’s no question that the position of EVs will improve in general from these guaranteed sales. Nissan brings to the table the #1 electric vehicle in the world, sales and marketing experience, and design/engineering skills. Bhutan, a laboratory for mountainous testing conditions, constitutes a mighty powerful and relatively captive test market with a favorable, environmentally motivated government. And EVs on the whole benefit not only by a guaranteed increase in their numbers and visibility. They also gain more experience with government/manufacturer partnering and a sturdier grasp on the world’s most difficult road conditions.
